Dungeon Master

Everybody who has seen the animated D&D-TV-series knows that the Dungeon Master is not some invisible, intangible figure, but just another person who is just good at hiding.

The DM Prestige Class is chosen by powerful wizards and sorcerers who wish to quit the life of active adventuring. Instead, they prefer to manipulate events behind the screens, starting their own little agendas and sending adventurers on more or less interesting and thrilling quests.

All DMs share the mysterious idea of being disconnected from the rest of the world, even going so far as to make some kind of physical barrier - the so-called DM Screen - responsible. Whatever the nature of this DM Screen, be it an abstract idea, a belief system or even a real, tangible wall of some kind, all DM's develop a mystic connection to it. They learn to use their separation from the world to shield themselves of danger, to cover up their plans and intrigues, and plot their campaigns from a safe hiding place.

All DM's are wizards and sorcerers, as only devoted arcane spellcasters are able to develop the connection to the Screen. Are large percentage are wizard specialists, all developing their own style of DMing.

Illusionists are reputed to be the best Dungeon Masters, known for their vivid landscapes and creative adventures. They are closely followed by Enchanters, whose NPC’s can only be described as charming. Diviners are without doubt best informed about the campaign world and laws of the world.

Conjurers tend to concentrate on the pure Hack and Slash component, sometimes ignoring hindrances such as storylines or world consistency altogether and just skipping from combat encounter to combat encounter. Necromancer DM’s are known for their recurring villains, while Evokers are feared for sudden and somewhat mysterious PC deaths, usually relying on divine interventions (i. e., a lighting out of clear sky) to keep the story going.

Transmuters have an ill reputation for changing already established storylines, messing around with PC stats and characters and constantly changing entire rule complexes. Abjurer DM’s have a very defensive attitude about gamemastering, often letting the PC’s take initiative and concentrating on throwing obstacles in their way instead of creating a plotline of their own.

Sorcerers are prone to relying on the same tricks and monsters in all their plots, and although they are adept at rearranging their preferred plot components, their stories tend to get repetitive and a bit boring after some time.

NPC DM's are hard to find at the very best, usually revered as the incarnated favour of Heaven itself, but usually believed to be creatures of myths and fairy tales.

Protection of the Screen

Cover of the Screen: The DM learns to hide behind his screen, gaining partial cover against all attacks and a +8 circumstance bonus on Hide checks.

Allies of the Screen: Invoking ancient vows of loyalty connected to the Screen, the DM gains many allies among the monstrous population of the world. He can cast spells of the Summon Monster and Summon Nature’s Ally list at will, with a caster level equal to his character level. He can use spells with a spell level of up to twice his class level. At fifth class level, he gains access to the Gate spell (summon variant only).

Mystery of the Screen: The DM’s hiding ability extends into the supernatural, and he and his plans cannot be learned about by Divination spells except by Detect Chaos, Augury, Divination, Commune, Legend Lore and Contact Other Plane.

Power of the Screen: The Screen grants the DM absolute control over the environment. He can use Weather Control, Veil, Reverse Gravity, Earthquake, Move Earth, Disintegrate and Wall of Stone at will with a caster level equal to his character level.

Protection of the Screen: The DM Screen gains powerful protective powers, granting the DM a Damage Reduction of 50/-, a Spell Resistance of 50+class level and all the immunities of Undead.
